You might not recognize the name, but you'll know one when you see it: the black body with white details, the cheerful, upturned mouth, the jaunty bow tie, the bright, vertical pupils shifting back and forth like a metronome in time with a pendulum-like tail.

It's the Kit-Cat Clock, an American-made cultural icon that is celebrating its 80th birthday with a float in the Pasadena Rose Parade on Monday. And a local vendor of the beloved feline timepiece has been in California since Thursday helping to bring the Kit-Cat Clock float to life.

"It's more than you can imagine. Your senses are just overloaded," said Lisa Bindas, owner of Gotta Have It!, a specialty retail store in Fairhaven.

Along with her partner, Jaci Barnett, she spent hours Thursday and Friday gluing flowers onto the float, which, in accordance with Rose Parade rules, must be completely covered in natural materials such as flowers, leaves and seeds.

They were even there when workers got the hands on three-story-high Kit-Cat's stomach to run like, well, clockwork. It is the centerpiece in a retro-style float with the slogan "Timeless fun for everyone," which also includes a jukebox, a banana split and a skateboard ramp that allows professional skateboarders to actually exit the float and continue riding on the street.

"You just don't even appreciate how much work goes into it until you come here," Bindas said.

Bindas and Barnett were invited to be part of the group of volunteers working on the float because of their enthusiasm for the product, said Kit-Cat Clock spokesman David Milburn.

"They go above and beyond other retailers," he said. "When they expressed an interest in being out here, we jumped on it. ... We just wanted people with their energy level and excitement out here."

Bindas added the clock ? the happy little cat first appeared as a symbol of hope during the Great Depression ? to her retail offerings just before Christmas after learning that for its entire 80-year history, it has been manufactured in the United States. That bit of information also appealed to her customers, who eagerly bought up the products.

"It was definitely one of the most popular items in the store, especially when people found out they were made in the United States," she said.

The "above and beyond" that Milburn referred to was Bindas' construction of a huge Kit-Cat Clock head, which she placed inside a miniature antique "woodie," a wood-bodied car, and displayed outside her store. The feline friends also get prominent coverage on the store's website.

Bindas said she and Barnett have been getting the VIP treatment since their arrival, as seasoned workers showed them the inner workings of many of the 43 floats in the parade. They also received tickets to the Rose Bowl football game, at the 40-yard line. On Friday night, they attended a special reception just for the sponsors of the floats, and, the day after the parade, they will be accompanying the Kit-Cat Clock float to Victory Park ? where all the floats are on display ? to hand out Kit-Cat memorabilia.

From their seats in the grandstand at the beginning of the parade, Bindas and Barnett hope to give a gift back to Kit-Cat. They ordered 1,000 face fans, all bearing the countenance of the jolly Kit-Cat, which they plan to pass out to all of the people in the grandstand. As the float drives by them during the parade, a crowd of Kit-Cat faces will be smiling back.

"When you see the smile of that cat, it's contagious," Bindas said. "Whether times are good or bad, the cat will always have a smile."

Apple lead designer Jonathan Ive knighted for the New Year, how's your 2012 looking?

Apple Senior VP Jonathan (or Jony) Ive has been credited with fueling the company's resurgence alongside Steve Jobs with products like the iMac, iPhone and iPad, and for these successes has been made a Knight Commander of the British Empire as a part of the New Year's Honour's List. Aside from having a much better NYE celebration than yours, he'll be tapped on the shoulders by the Queen's sword (we'll see if he can make it through the ceremony without suggesting some tweaks for better balance and usability -- you can see his passion above as he eats an invisible sandwich pontificates about new iMacs) and that will forever be Sir Jony to you, commoner. It's a bump up from his previous title of Commander of the British Empire, and a full circle, as he noted benefiting from a "wonderful tradition in the UK of designing and making" in a statement.

(AP) ? Hundreds of thousands of North Koreans packed the main plaza in Pyongyang as the nation's next leader looked on from a balcony at a solemn memorial for late leader Kim Jong Il Thursday.

Kim Jong Un stood watching from a balcony at the Grand People's Study House overlooking Kim Il Sung Square, flanked by the top party and military officials.

It was a cold, gray day as the memorial began with a silent tribute for the man who led his 24 million people with absolute rule for 17 years after taking power following the 1994 death of his father, North Korea founder Kim Il Sung.

A sea of soldiers filled the square, often the site of the massive military parades that Kim Jong Il loved, some of the seen stamping and trying to keep warm before the ceremony began.

The entire country is engulfed in sadness, a solemn Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly and the ceremonial head of state, told the crowd. State television showed a smiling photograph of Kim Jong Il below him.

The memorial was taking place on the second day of funeral ceremonies for Kim Jong Il, who died of a heart attack Dec. 17 at age 69, according to state media.

The events are being watched closely for signs to who will take power in the next era of leadership in the country founded by Kim Il Sung in 1948 and led since then by the Kim family.

On Wednesday, hundreds of thousands of mourners had lined the streets as Kim Jong Il's hearse had made its way through the snowy streets in a 2 1/2-hour-long funeral procession.

Nintendo introduces paid DLC, lets you complete the games you completed

Did you get a Nintendo shaped bundle of joy for Christmas? Completed the games already? Fear not, as from March Kyoto's gaming veterans will be launching paid downloadable game content for its 3D handheld. The first title to get the goodies will be Fire Emblem, and as yet, there's no clues about what treats you'll get for the reported "several hundred yen" you'll be asked to stump up. Nintendo, however, is understandably keen to stimulate interest in its 3D titles, and more importantly, claw back some of that mobile gaming market-share. With hints of downloadable add-ons coming to the Wii-U also, and Mr Iwata's previous commitment to deliver the goods, it clearly thinks this is the way to go -- let's just hope all the kinks have been ironed out come release day.

GOP Candidates Set for Campaign Trail

(NewsCore) - With the Christmas holidays drawing to a close, the candidates for the Republican presidential nomination are getting ready to hit the campaign trail with just eight days to go until the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses.

With polls in Iowa showing a fluid race, the state will see plenty of candidates up close and personal in the final week. Every candidate with the exception of former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman will be there this week in a last-ditch effort to gather votes ahead of next Tuesday's caucuses.

Recent Iowa polls have shown Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney vying for the lead with Newt Gingrich not far behind.

Romney will be in both New Hampshire and Iowa Tuesday, spending the early part of the day meeting with Granite State voters in Londonderry and Portsmouth before flying to Iowa to deliver evening remarks in Davenport.

While he has made New Hampshire his firewall state, Romney has tried to compete under the radar in Iowa while carefully managing expectations in the state. On Wednesday, he begins a three-day bus tour of Iowa in an attempt to win the state.

The latest New Hampshire poll released by The Boston Globe over the weekend showed Romney with 39 percent support, ahead of Paul and Gingrich who were tied in second place with 17 percent.

Gingrich -- who spent the holidays in Virginia before flying to visit his wife's family in Wisconsin -- begins a "Jobs and Prosperity" bus tour of Iowa Tuesday which kicks off in Dubuque and will make 11 stops over three days.

The former House Speaker, who recently led in the state but has fallen victim to a barrage of negative attacks from rivals in the last few weeks, currently averages about 15 percent support in recent Iowa polls.

Paul will take Tuesday off before spending the rest of the week stumping in the Hawkeye State.

After spending Christmas in Minnesota, Bachmann returns to western Iowa, where she will hold no less than 10 events Tuesday, starting in Council Bluffs and ending in Hamlin. Bachmann is trying to achieve her goal of visiting each of Iowa's 99 counties by caucus day.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry also returns to Iowa Tuesday, making stops in the western part of the state, including Council Bluffs, Clarinda, Creston and Osceola. His campaign schedule says he will remain in the state throughout the week.

Rick Santorum, the only candidate to have visited all of Iowa's 99 counties, was already back on the trail Monday with a press availability following a pheasant hunt in Adel, Iowa. He currently places sixth in Iowa polls behind Perry and Bachmann.

After spending the holidays in Salt Lake City, Huntsman continues to ignore Iowa and will instead return to New Hampshire, where he has staked his candidacy, later in the week ahead of its Jan. 10 primary.

Mexico says it captures drug-lord security chief

Aide to top drug lord arrested in Mexico

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

  • Alleged drug kingpin's lieutenant handled his security in Durango, Defense Ministry says
  • The arrest will affect Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman's Sinaloa cartel, official says
  • Guzman is a billionaire who is wanted in Mexico and the United States

(CNN) -- Mexican army special forces have arrested a top lieutenant for alleged drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the Defense Ministry said Monday.

Troops arrested Felipe Cabrera Sarabia on Friday in "a surgical operation in Cuiliacan" in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, said Ricardo Trevilla Trejo, a Defense Ministry spokesman.

Cabrera, who was responsible for the activities of the Pacific Cartel in Durango and the southern part of the state of Chihuahua, was detained after fleeing from Durango, Trevilla told reporters.

"The analysis of his behavior permitted (us) to find the building where he was hiding" and Cabrera was taken into custody without violence, Trevilla said. Firearms, computer equipment and other documentation were seized, too, he said.

Cabrera, who appeared Monday in the office of a prosecutor who specializes in organized crime, was responsible for Guzman's security in Durango, the state-run Notimex news agency said.

He is charged with possessing firearms reserved for use by the army and falsification of a public document, a spokeswoman for the attorney general said.

Trevilla said Cabrera was involved in kidnappings, extortion and arson.

"The violence caused him to rise within the organization," said Trevilla, who predicted that the arrest will affect the cartel's leadership and abilities.

Guzman, who is under indictment by U.S. authorities in Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, is described by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration as one of "the most powerful drug traffickers in Mexico." In 2004, the U.S. government announced a $5 million reward for information leading to his arrest and conviction.

He is accused of running a major network that distributes cocaine and heroin.

He is worth about $1 billion, according to Forbes Magazine, which began listing him on its billionaires list in 2009. The magazine lists him as No. 55 on its Most Powerful People list and as the only crime lord on its list of Mexico's billionaires.

Defending the genome

Thursday, December 22, 2011

Small, mobile sequences of DNA left over from viruses, called transposons or "jumping genes" because of their ability to move around the genome, pose a significant threat to the genetic integrity and stability of an organism. Considered genetic parasites, these transposable elements are believed to comprise as much as 50 percent of the human genome. Because of the damage transposons can do to an organism's DNA, an immune-like response has evolved to turn off, or silence, these mobile genetic elements.

New research published in the journal Cell by the labs of William E. Theurkauf and Zhiping Weng at the University of Massachusetts Medical School sheds light on how the genome defends itself from these invading DNA parasites.

While it's known that specific small RNAs called Piwi-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are responsible for silencing transposons, how this biologically critical system reacts to the introduction of a new transposon isn't fully understood. "The genome is littered with these transposons," said William E. Theurkauf, PhD, professor of molecular medicine at UMass Medical School and lead author of the study. "In Drosophila there are over 120 different forms of transposons and these are the active pathogen that we are looking at in this host-pathogen response. Meanwhile, piRNAs are produced from regions of the genome that contain bits and pieces of these transposons, and are the foundation for how these elements get silenced."

To understand how a genome responds to the introduction of a new transposon, Theurkauf and colleagues turned to a wild Drosophila, or fruit flies. Unlike standard lab-bred fruit flies, wild Drosophila contain a transposon called the P element that first began appearing in the population after scientists started breeding fruit flies to study genetic heredity in the early part of the 20th century. As a result, lab-bred fruit flies lack the P element transposon and the maternally inherited piRNA necessary to silence it. When these lab-bred females are crossed with the P element-carrying wild fruit flies, the off-spring are unable to silence the invading transposon and are sterile as a result.

Jaspreet Khurana, a PhD student in Theurkauf's lab, made the keen observation that as these flies aged the hybrids were gaining fertility. "Based on the observation that the flies recovered, it seemed likely that they were learning how to shut down transposons. We decided to use this system to look at the process of adaptation to a new transposable element," said Theurkauf.

Using a multi-disciplinary approach that included next generation sequencing, Theurkauf and colleagues were able to get complete genetic sequences of the sterile, hybrid flies at various stages of development. Jie Wang, PhD, a postdoc in the lab of Zhiping Weng, PhD, professor and director of the Program in Bioinformatics and Integrative Biology at UMass Medical School, analyzed the genetic information to see how the genome was responding to the introduction of the new transposon.

What they found was startling. In the hybrid off spring, the new transposon had triggered a response that disrupted the entire piRNA machinery. Not only was the newly introduced transposon jumping around the genome and causing a problem ? which was expected ? but most of the 120 plus transposons in the Drosophila genome had also become active. "This massive destabilization of the genome is probably why they're sterile," said Theurkauf.

As the hybrids aged, however, the new transposon and all the existing, resident transposons, got shut down and fertility was restored. "We found there were two mechanisms responsible for silencing the transposons," said Weng. "For P elements it turned out the flies learned to process the piRNA transcripts inherited from the father and turn them into mature piRNAs and silence the transposon. Resident transposons, by contrast, jump into piRNA clusters and alter the architecture in a way that makes new piRNAs that can silence the resident elements."

"The bottom line on our study is when you introduce a single, new transposon it leads to a genetic crisis that activates all the transposons in the genome and compromises fertility in these hybrids," said Theurkauf. "Remarkably, what emerges at the other end is an organism with an altered genome architecture that functionally recharges the piRNA clusters so they more effectively silence transposons."

Former PSU players show support for JoePa (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? More than 340 players once coached by Joe Paterno have shown support for their former Penn State coach through a letter released in time for his 85th birthday Wednesday.

Hall of Famer Lydell Mitchell, a standout Nittany Lions running back from 1969-71, helped organize the effort and hoped to get more signatures in the coming days. It's believed to be the largest such effort by former players since school trustees fired Paterno last month in the aftermath of child sex-abuse charges against retired defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky.

Since then, Paterno has been diagnosed with what his family has called a treatable form of lung cancer. He is undergoing radiation and chemotherapy.

"He is not aware of (the letter)," Mitchell said Tuesday night in a phone interview. "It is so important that he keeps his health up and stays strong ... We're in the fight with him."

Paterno, like Mitchell is in the College Football Hall of Fame.

The letter posted online addressed from "The Penn State Football Family" is entitled "We Stand in Support of Joe and Penn State." Besides Mitchell, other notable signees include Greg Buttle, Shane Conlan, LaVar Arrington and Ki-Jana Carter.

"As members of the Penn State community, we are deeply saddened by the allegations against Jerry Sandusky, and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families. Given the allegations against Sandusky, we understand the public's outrage because we share it," the letter begins.

Sandusky, who has pleaded not guilty to the allegations that span from 1994 to 2009, is awaiting trial. Authorities have said Paterno is not a target of the investigation, though he was dismissed by trustees amid mounting pressure that school leaders should have done more to stop alleged abuse.

"At the same time, however, it's important to remember that all of the facts surrounding this troubling matter are not known," the letter continues. "Until all of the facts are known and due process has run its course, we ask that the public reserve judgment about Joe Paterno and the Penn State community."

The letter goes on to praise Paterno's impact on his former players off the field. "Joe has taught Penn State faith, fairness, philanthropy and the importance of academic excellence ? all values that make Penn State a great institution today, the letter said.

Mitchell said the effort came together to honor Paterno's 60-plus years of coaching, including the final 46 as head coach.

"I'm just speaking to coach Paterno's character. The type of guy he's been over the years," Mitchell said in the phone interview. "He didn't just care from (us) as football players. He cared for us as people. These are the things that really meant so much to me."

Paterno was released from the hospital Sunday, a week after breaking his pelvis again following a fall at home. He stayed in the hospital to make it easier to get cancer treatments while his pelvis healed.

Mitchell hopes to visit Paterno next week.

"Many in the Penn State community view the public's rush to judgment of Joe as a rush to judgment of everything Penn State. We ask for due process for Joe Paterno and the Penn State community," the letter said. "Based on the immense quality of Joe's character and the absence of all the facts, we stand in support of Joe and Penn State."

Omada Health Raises $850K From Esther Dyson & More To Take On Diabetes

OmadaHealth_LogoOmada Health, a graduate of Rock Health's first batch of startups, is announcing today that it has raised $800K in seed funding from a number of angel and venture investors, including Esther Dyson, NEA, Aberdare, Kapor Capital, and TriplePoint Ventures to name a few. Omada Health, simply put, has turned its focus to one of the most pervasive diseases in the country: Diabetes. Well, really, prediabetes. The CDC estimates that 79 million people in the U.S. currently have prediabetes -- said another way, that's approximately 1 in 3 adults. And the majority of those people are not aware of their condition, which essentially means that they are suffering from blood glucose levels that are not irregular enough to be considered diabetes, yet still indicate an extremely high risk of progressing to full-blown diabetes.

Fuel leaks off cargo ship beached off French coast (AP)

ERDEVEN, France ? High winds beached a cargo ship on France's jagged Atlantic coast and some of the 220 tons of fuel on board leaked out, threatening a local beach.

The 19-member crew of the "TK Bremen" was evacuated by helicopter early Friday as the vessel ran aground off Erdeven beach in southern Brittany, on the northwest coast of France.

The prefecture of the Morbihan region said in a statement that a kilometer-long (0.6 mile) strip of fuel was headed toward the beach. A giant nature preserve of dunes and wildlife runs through Erdevan, one of many small coastal towns that attracts tourists for its natural beauty.

The local government warned people to stay indoors as rescuers pumped fuel from the hold of the Maltese flagged ship in a bid to empty it.

The French electric company said Friday some 320,000 homes were without electricity as winds of up to 130 kilometers per hour (81 mph) blew across France, triggering alerts in numerous regions. Most of the outages were in the country's west, but some areas in the east and southeast were hit as the storm moved across France.

Heavy rains in low-lying areas and hurricane-force winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour (93 mph) lashed neighboring Switzerland, and train connections and boat services on some lakes in the Alpine country were disrupted. Swiss airports canceled or diverted dozens of flights ? with more than 100 called off at Zurich's hub alone.

Cairo clashes mar Egypt parliamentary election (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Demonstrators armed with stones and petrol bombs clashed with troops wielding truncheons and electric prods in Cairo on Friday, witnesses said, in the worst violence since the start of Egypt's first free election in six decades.

Military police tried to break up a sit-in by pro-democracy activists overnight and anger at their rough tactics erupted into clashes that quickly turned the streets around parliament into a rock-strewn battle zone.

In a pattern of spreading violence that has become a familiar refrain during nine months of army rule since President Hosni Mubarak's overthrow, protesters regrouped in growing numbers as resentment at security forces' tactics grew.

By early afternoon, troops were trying to disperse around 10,000 protesters with truncheons and what witnesses said appeared to be cattle prods that they used to give electric shocks to some of the demonstrators.

Ambulance sirens wailed, reports of beatings of well-known democracy activists buzzed across social media and politicians from Islamists to liberals lined up to condemn the army's heavy-handed tactics.

"Even if the sit-in was not legal, should it be dispersed with such brutality and barbarity?" presidential candidate and former U.N. nuclear watchdog director Mohamed ElBaradei said on Facebook.

A health ministry official said 99 people had been injured in the clashes and five had gunshot wounds.

The sit-in outside the cabinet office was a remnant of far bigger protests last month in Cairo's Tahrir Square and nearby streets that left dozens dead and overshadowed the build-up to the first parliamentary vote since Mubarak's fall in February.

In Friday's disturbances, cars were set alight and part of a state building was torched.

Troops and unidentified men in plainclothes hurled rocks from the roof of one parliament building on protesters who threw stones, shards of glass and petrol bombs.

Demonstrators piled car tires and plastic materials in the street and set them alight to send up plumes of black smoke and block the view of the street from above.

The head of the ruling military council, Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, ordered that everyone injured in the fighting be treated in army hospitals, state television said.

An army source told Reuters that 32 security personnel who were guarding the parliament were also injured trying to stop protesters breaking into the building.

Ziad el-Elaimy, a leading figure in the liberal Egyptian Bloc who ran for parliament in Cairo, said he was beaten by security forces when he arrived to witness the scene.

When he protested, army officers told him: "To hell with you and your parliament," according to Elaimy.

BATTLEGROUND

The six-week vote for the lower house of parliament has been mostly peaceful since it began on November 28. A big first-round turnout took some of the steam out of street protests aimed at pressuring the military to hand power immediately to civilians.

Those protests descended into days of clashes near Tahrir Square, prompting the army-backed government to resign and the ruling generals to pledge to step aside by the end of June 2012.

A new cabinet is due on Sunday to hold a first full meeting since it was sworn in on December 7 and plans to weigh new austerity measures to address a wider-than-expected budget deficit.

Protesters have occupied an area outside the cabinet office since late November, forcing the government to meet elsewhere. They said they were provoked into violence by the army, which was looking for an excuse to move in and break up the sit-in.

They said fighting flared after images were posted online of an activist who took part in the sit-in - named as Abboudi Ibrahim - being supported by a crowd, his face badly bruised and eyes swollen and shut after he was detained by military police.

Protester Bebars Mohamed, 19, said he was at the sit-in when military police grabbed Ibrahim.

"The army pushed us away from Parliament Street and burnt the tents. They threw rocks and glass on us," he said.

ARMY STILL IN CHARGE

Turnout appeared relatively high again in the second round of the parliamentary vote on Wednesday and Thursday, which took place in parts of greater Cairo, Ismailiya and Suez in the east, Aswan to the south and Nile Delta regions in the north.

The leading group, the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party (FJP), said it expected to hold on to its lead but that it was not clear whether its share of the vote would stay around the 40 percent mark.

Early indications suggested the FJP was maintaining its lead, followed again by the hardline Islamist Salafi Al-Nour party and the liberal Egyptian Bloc in third place, state newspapers reported on Friday.

The army, which took over after Mubarak was ousted, is in charge until a presidential election in mid-2012, but parliament will have a popular mandate that the ruling military council will find difficult to ignore as it oversees the transition.

"The council wants to spoil the elections. They don't want a parliament that has popular legitimacy unlike them and would challenge their authority," said Shadi Fawzy, a pro-democracy activist. "I don't believe they will hand over power in June."

Egypt's official news agency said a new civilian advisory council that was set up to offer guidance to the army generals on policy would meet later on Friday to discuss the clashes.

But two members of the council, whose creation was seen as a concession to campaigners demanding an end to army rule, resigned because of the violence and said they would not attend.

Political experts said Prime Minister Kamal al-Ganzouri, who has made law and order a top priority for his new interim government, appeared unsure of how to act.

"The prime minister said he now had presidential powers, but he hasn't moved or spoken or issued clear directions," Adel Soliman, head of the International Centre for Future and Strategic Studies in Cairo. "There is complete silence from all those in power."

AT&T brings free WiFi to four more NYC parks, will occupy your downtime

AT&T's public WiFi rollout seems to be moving along rather splendidly, now that four additional New York City parks have been bathed in the golden rays of the internet. The carrier confirmed the expansion yesterday, announcing that its free WiFi service is now available at Mineral Springs and Tavern on the Green in Central Park, as well as Pier 6 in Brooklyn Bridge Park and Devoe Park, up in the Bronx. That brings AT&T closer to its goal of 26 WiFi-enabled city locations, and inches New Yorkers ever closer to networked nirvana. Full PR after the break.

Howard Stern named judge on 'America's Got Talent' (AP)

NEW YORK ? Howard Stern will be joining the judges' panel on "America's Got Talent," and the NBC summer talent show will uproot itself from Los Angeles to accommodate the New York-based shock jock, the network said Thursday.

NBC confirmed weeks-old rumors of Stern's selection to join fellow "Talent" judges Howie Mandel and Sharon Osbourne. Nick Cannon remains host.

Stern, whose daily radio show airs on Sirius XM, is replacing Piers Morgan, who left "Talent" after last season to free up his busy schedule. Last winter, Morgan launched a weeknight interview program on CNN.

"Howard Stern's larger-than-life personality will bring a thrilling new dynamic to `America's Got Talent' starting this summer," said Paul Telegdy, NBC's president of alternative and late night programming. "He's a proven innovator and his track record in broadcasting is truly remarkable."

The Parents Television Council, a watchdog group, wasted no time condemning NBC's choice on Thursday.

Its president, Tim Winter, called hiring Stern "an act of desperation for a flailing network," and slammed Stern as "a performer who is synonymous with shock, profanity and obscenity."

"Talent" bills itself as TV's only such competition show that is open to any age and any talent. Auditions for season seven began in October in major cities nationwide. But now, with Stern aboard, production of the live broadcast of the show will relocate to New York.

Stern, who in 2005 took his long-running syndicated show from terrestrial radio to Sirius XM, signed a new five-year contract with the satellite-radio company a year ago after months of stormy negotiations.

Wacom Bamboo Connect CTL470

The Wacom Bamboo Connect is a decent basic drawing tablet that shows how far prices have fallen over the past few years. At just $79.99, it gives you everything you need for simple collaboration or sketch work. But that's it. Thanks to the lack of an eraser or second programmable button on the pen, it's tough to recommend as an actual?drawing tool, and its relative lack of features make it a poor deal overall.

Design, Product Line, and Setup
The Bamboo Connect measures 6.9 by 10.9 by 0.4 inches (HWD). Wacom streamlined the design, but only partially; while it's slimmer, and there are fewer cut lines and buttons than on the older Bamboo Pen?& Touch CTH460 (4 stars), there's now extra space on one side for no appreciable reason. The entire tablet is still made of black plastic, with a glossy plastic bar over the "wasted" space, a blue LED light indicating a live connection, a hard textured surface around the tablet's edges, and a fluorescent green nylon pen holder.

The pleasantly tacky drawing surface measures 5.8 by 3.6 inches, which is the same as before. This time around, you can detach the USB cord, which helps if you need to move the tablet on your desk for some reason, although there's no wireless option on this lowest-cost version.

Speaking of which, Wacom broke the Bamboo line into three new tablets. The Bamboo Connect CTL470 ($79.99) is a basic model intended for collaborating, sketching out ideas, marking up documents, and taking notes. It includes Autodesk SketchBook Express 2011, and is the subject of this review. The?Bamboo Capture CTH470?($99.99, 3.5 stars) adds multi-touch, compatibility with the company's Wireless Option and full versions of Adobe Photoshop Elements 8 and Nik Color Efex Pro Filters 3.0, which is a good deal for the software alone. The Bamboo Create CTH670 ($199.99) is a larger version that doubles the size of the drawing area, in order to accommodate broader brush strokes. The Create also adds an eraser to the stylus, and you get a copy of Corel Painter Essentials 4.0, plus all of the above software (with Photoshop Elements bumped to version 9, presumably thanks to a licensing issue).

All three tablets are compatible with Windows 7, Vista, and XP, as well as Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) or later. Installing the Bamboo Connect is dead simple: with your PC booted on and at the Windows desktop, connect the USB cable, insert the bundled DVD, and follow the on-screen instructions. I had no problem installing the Bamboo Connect on a Lenovo ThinkPad L420 Core i3-powered laptop with 8GB RAM and Windows 7 Service Pack 1 installed.

Drawing, Testing, and Conclusions
Wacom has been producing drawing surfaces for the better part of two decades, so even the inexpensive Bamboo Connect works reliably. At 1,024 levels of pressure sensitivity, the Bamboo Connect offers twice the precision as the Pen and Touch, at least in terms of how hard you press down the tip. Otherwise, position accuracy remains about the same as before, which is to say good, if not quite as crisp as the company's higher-priced Intuos and Cintiq lines.

If you've never used a drawing tablet before, be aware it takes some practice. When you bring the pen close to the surface, but don't actually press down, you'll see the cursor move on the screen. That lets you use the pen as a suspended mouse for selecting user interface elements on screen. It also lets you see where you are about to lay ink down. Once you begin pressing the pen tip down on the surface, it begins to draw on the screen. It's not like a mouse, in that it lays down the same length of ink no matter how fast or slow you move the pen. With a mouse, if you move it slowly, it will take more of your actual desk or table to bring the cursor from one side of the screen to the other, depending on how you have the mouse sensitivity calibrated.

On the other hand, the pen's ability to control the cursor without touching the screen means you'll need to expand the drawing surface window to cover the full desktop. Otherwise, you'll constantly select text in other windows or move desktop icons around by accident, unless you're extremely careful (I couldn't pull it off).?Worse, there's no multi-touch on the Bamboo Connect either, unlike with last year's Pen & Touch.

Our favorite lower-cost drawing tablet remains the Wacom Intuos4 ($239 and up, 4 stars), which has still finer pressure sensitivity, an eraser, more programmable buttons, and a larger drawing surface. All told, the Bamboo Connect's lack of multitouch and the eraser are big downsides, ones that essentially remove its ability to work as a drawing tablet, or as a proper mouse or trackpad substitute. Wacom admits this in the advertising copy, by saying the Connect is for sketching out ideas and collaboration, rather than drawing. But it's still a drawing tablet, and it's still $80 for something that feels artificially crippled. The bundled software is also much less valuable. Manufacturers normally create tiered product lines to give more demanding users incentive to buy the higher-priced models, but in this case it's tough to come up with a compelling reason to buy the Connect.

Film reveals Paris crackdown of 1961 Algeria protest (Reuters)

DUBAI (Reuters) ? When Yasmina Adi got access to archives documenting the 1961 repression of Algerian protesters in Paris, she was shocked to uncover a trove of material relating to gaps in the story of one of the most contested events in recent French history.

As Algeria's battle for independence spilled into France, Paris police chief Maurice Papon ordered police to crack down on thousands of Algerian protesters who defied a curfew on October 17 1961. Dozens of bodies were later pulled from the River Seine.

Papon, who died in 2007, was the only French Nazi official to be convicted for his role in the deportation of Jews during World War Two. France has acknowledged the deaths of 40 people in the 1961 incident, but Adi says her research suggests it was much worse.

"This period remains a blank page. France doesn't recognize October 17 in school history books, it is not mentioned. Nothing you saw is in textbooks," Adi, who is of Algerian origin, said after "Here We Drown Algerians - October 17, 1961" aired at the Dubai International Film Festival this week.

"The people you saw are getting old, so this is an attempt to maintain the historical memory."

The documentary is narrated through the testimony of Algerians dragged off the streets by police and uses archive footage showing haunting images of thousands held in detention centers, transported in buses and sitting in planes during deportation.

A media campaign branded the protesters as Muslim terrorists, Adi's film says.

Some, such as Hadda Khalfi, one of the main interviewees who explains how her husband disappeared never to return, have never received an apology or compensation from the state.

"I managed to (access) the archives of the police department and state archives, which even some historians have not got permission to see. Then I asked myself what security bodies were there, and I found they all had their own archives," Adi said.

"It was the same for the filmed material... sometimes I noticed there were two people taking photos, so I said I have to go find them," she added.

"So I pieced together each part, when they put the Algerians on buses, when they detained them at the police department, the unseen photos from the Palais du Sport, the expulsions, the women's protest. At a certain point I said to myself 'wow'."

The true number of those who died may never be known.

"It's difficult to establish a figure. Some say 100, some say 200, some say 400, it's complicated. The police prefecture has a list of dead but these lists are not trustworthy," Adi said. "We could say around more than 1,500 were expelled."

GRAFFITI

Adi took the title for the film from graffiti daubed on a bridge over the Seine on October 28 1961 and caught on camera before the authorities could remove it. The words and the image she says dropped out of France's collective consciousness for decades.

She says France's unwillingness to offer more public recognition of what happened in those days contrasts with France's championing of Arab Spring causes such as Libya, which was taken up by President Nicolas Sarkozy and Bernard Henri-Levy, a prominent public intellectual in France.

"Sarkozy has said a few weeks ago why should Turkey be in Europe? If you Turks want to be in Europe you have to recognize the Armenian genocide. Before giving lessons to others, France ought to look at itself in history," she said.

"As citizens we should not allow ourselves to be manipulated by methods, images, language, because they cross time and governments take up the same methods and language."

France has had a complex relationship with Algeria since it was forced to give up a colony it ruled for 132 years in 1962 after a bitter war. Sarkozy has refused to apologize for Algerian dead.

France considered Algeria an integral part of the French state and more than 1 million French fled the country in the months before Algeria finally became independent.

Adi said she was surprised to see large audiences of young French people attending the screenings of her film in France when it was released in October.

"There were few Algerians but many French at the screenings, because many young people in particular are rediscovering the past and realizing it's not an Algerian problem but a Franco-Algerian problem," she said.

(AP) ? Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos came through again with a strong, determined finish after enduring another slow start.

This time, Tebow was in a groove the entire second half -- not just in the waning minutes -- and his teammates on defense were getting gobbled up. But there they were in the end, emulating Tebow's late-game touch.

Tebow passed for a season-best 202 yards and two third-quarter touchdowns to help the unflappable Broncos win their fifth straight game, 35-32 over the Minnesota Vikings Sunday on Matt Prater's 23-yard field goal as time expired.

"I know that I had a lot of help. Offensive line did a great job, and receivers stepped up and made me look a lot better than I really am," said Tebow, who completed 10 of 15 passes, his best percentage as an NFL starter, and posted a career-high passer rating of 149.3.

Prater kicked two field goals in the final 93 seconds for the Broncos (7-5), who forged a first-place tie in the AFC West with a loss by the Oakland Raiders. Christian Ponder set Minnesota's single-game rookie record with 381 yards passing, including a pair of long touchdowns to Percy Harvin, but his sideline throw with 1:33 remaining was intercepted by Andre Goodman and returned to the 15-yard line.

Lance Ball's first-down run for 11 yards made it first-and-goal at the 4 with 1:12 remaining, but the Vikings decided against letting them score right away and took their chances with a shank or a block instead. But the Broncos drained the clock for Prater's winner and raised their record to 6-1 with Tebow as the starter.

"Hard to argue. That guy wins games," Ponder said.

Harvin had a career-high 156 yards for the Vikings (2-10), who lost their fourth in a row.

"Too many times this year we've had leads and then had letdowns or missed assignments," Harvin said. "It's another game we feel we had control of, and to somehow let it slip away, that's disgusting."

In seven games with Tebow, the Broncos offense has 30 first-half points. They were blanked in this one, on the board only because of Mario Haggan's 16-yard interception return for a first-quarter score. Tebow's third turnover of the season, a sack by Jared Allen that forced a fumble with 39 seconds left before halftime, gave the Vikings three free points.

But they can't be counted out. Whether their unconventional quarterback is trying to complete a down-field pass or if they're flirting again with defeat, the Broncos haven't flinched.

"There were a lot of questions on the outside. Sometimes it gets built up like they were on the inside, but the one thing I will say is the guy wins," coach John Fox said. "He does it with his feet. He does it with his arm. He's young. He's just going to get better."

Harvin, a fellow former Florida star, said he was worried once Tebow got the ball late in the game.

"I was sure enough hoping we were going to get him, but I've been on his teams," Harvin said, adding: "He's a winner. He's a leader. All of the things you hear about, you may think it's too much, but that's what he is."

After serving as the backbone of Denver's resurgence, putting Tebow in position for all of those rallies, the Broncos gave up 489 yards. Toby Gerhart gained 91 yards on 21 carries. But they picked off Ponder twice, recovered his fumble and applied enough pressure to equalize the game.

"It's been fun, a fun ride," Haggan said. "This team is close, believes, has a lot of character, but we're not done."

Demaryius Thomas caught four passes for 144 yards and both touchdowns for the Broncos, who have won four games with Tebow by either four or three points. Thomas was wide open twice, with the coverage by Minnesota's depleted secondary breaking down often, but Tebow had to find him. Pushed out of the pocket with no one open, he ran left and delivered on on-target across-his-body throw to Thomas, who ran the rest of the way and dragged a couple of defenders into the end zone for a 41-yard score that cut the Minnesota lead to 22-21 late in the third.

"We put in a lot of work," Thomas said. "It's paid off. It's about that time."

During a dizzying display of back-and-forth touchdowns, with both Ponder and Tebow putting together their best games as pros. Ryan Longwell's third field goal, with 3:06 left, made it 32-29 Vikings, teeing another one up for Tebow.

He threw a wobbler that still landed on target, when Thomas hauled in a 40-yard completion. Thomas couldn't bring in the third-down pass at the goal line, but Prater tied the game with a 46-yarder before Ponder's second glaring mistake.

Harvin's second score, a 48-yard catch and run, was the first fourth-quarter touchdown given up by the Broncos in five games and made it 29-21 Minnesota. They averaged 15 points allowed over their previous four games.

But there went the Broncos again. Tebow hit Thomas for 42 yards, and Willis McGahee rumbled into the end zone from 24 yards out. Then Tebow took the snap on the 2-point conversion and rolled to his right and over the goal line to tie the game at 29.

Except for that play, he looked more like pocket passer on this afternoon, running only four times.

"It's crazy. Just try to do whatever they ask of me," Tebow said.

Notes: Haggan, a ninth-year veteran who started in place of injured LB Von Miller, came up with the first interception of his career. He also led the team with 12 tackles, three for losses. ... Tebow's NFL career high is 308 yards passing, against Houston on Dec. 26, 2010. ... Allen tied an NFL record with his fourth career safety, stopping McGahee in the end zone on the Broncos' first play. McGahee had 111 yards on 20 attempts. ... All three replay reviews, including a TD pass to Kyle Rudolph, went in favor of the Vikings.

AU calls for calm ahead of Congo poll results (Reuters)

KINSHASA (Reuters) ? The African Union has urged politicians in the Democratic Republic of Congo to show restraint after the main opposition parties rejected partial election results that showed President Joseph Kabila in the lead.

With fears growing that the publication of preliminary election results in two days could lead to unrest, the continental body said candidates should make any challenges to the outcome through legal channels.

Results from around a third of polling stations give Kabila a clear lead over his main rival, veteran opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi, who has strong support in the capital Kinshasa where outbreaks of violence occurred ahead of the poll.

The opposition says those preliminary results are skewed and were released early to prepare the country for a fraudulent final outcome. The election commission says it was obliged to publish the early figures because hackers put bogus results on its website showing Tshisekedi in the lead.

"(AU Commission President Jean) Ping strongly calls on the entire political class to show restraint and responsibility so that the announcement of the ... results represent a moment of political maturity and reinforce democracy," the AU said in a statement.

Both Kabila's and Tshisekedi's camps say they are confident of victory.

The partial tally released by the electoral commission so far shows Kabila leading with 3,275,125 votes, while Tshisekedi trails with 2,233,447 votes, based on 33.3 percent of polling stations counted.

But the count includes virtually no results from Kinshasa and the percentage varied widely by province. Geographical trends will likely have a strong influence on the overall figure as voting is often on ethnic lines in much of the country.

HIGH-SPEED TRAIN

The largely Christian country's influential bishops' conference CENCO, which fielded some 30,000 election observers, called in a statement for election authorities to publish more information, including the number of spoiled ballots.

"We ask the Congolese people, political actors and the electoral commission to stick to the truth of the ballot box as expressed and published in the polling stations," it said.

Bishop Nicolas Djomo, president of CENCO, appealed for calm and warned that the country could see protracted civilian unrest similar to 1991 when locals in Kinshasa joined riots led by unpaid soldiers.

"We feel today as if there is a high-speed train heading straight for a wall, and no one wants to put on the brakes," he said, urging political leaders to act responsibly.

Congo's government has beefed up security in anticipation of the announcement of the results. Overnight, U.N. peacekeepers, Congolese riot police and heavily armed presidential guard soldiers patrolled the streets of Kinshasa.

Opposition parties on Saturday rejected the partial results and called on African leaders to intervene to prevent violence. Tshisekedi's party has ruled out a unity government, such as those put in place to calm post-election disputes of recent years in countries such as Kenya and Zimbabwe.

The presidential and parliamentary elections have been marred by chaotic organization, fraud allegations and violence in which at least 18 people have died, according to a toll provided by U.S.-based Human Rights Watch.

Three candidates called last week for the election to be annulled. African election observer groups said the poll was broadly credible despite cases of irregularities.
