Crashed plane found on Wash. mountain

By David Wyllie, breakingnews.com staff

Updated at 8 a.m. ET: A plane crashed into a mountain in Washington state overnight, officials told breakingnews.com Wednesday.

Susan Chapin, of King County sheriff's office, told breakingnews.com that people and officers in North Bend, Wash., said they had heard the sound of a stuttering engine and an explosion that "woke everyone in the town up."

After a search involving a helicopter, Chapin confirmed that they had found a plane in the Mount Si area.

They used night vision goggles to spot the aircraft from the helicopter.

They planned to move in closer with the helicopter at first light and lower someone on a rope down to check who was in the plane.

Chapin was unable to give details about the size or type of plane.

She said there was no smoke or fire visible, but any blaze may have burnt out over the course of several hours.

The Federal Aviation Administration notified the National Transportation Safety Board and it launched an investigation.

It is not thought to have been a commercial plane as none were reported missing.

The mountain involved is rocky and rises to approximately 2,000 feet and is snow capped. There were reports of intermittent ground fog overnight that may have contributed to the crash.
